Dailymotion's website asks, "What good is a video, if it's stuck on your camera, hard-drive, or mobile phone?" And thus, the video sharing service's mission statement is about "finding new ways to see, share and engage your world through the power of online video."
The headquarters of Dailymotion is in the 18th arrondissement in Paris, France. It is the largest video site in the world after YouTube (its domain name was registered one month after youtube was registered), with 72 million unique users every month since October 2010, and it's one of the top 50 most visited websites in the world. Users use Dailymotion to find or upload videos based on their interests or hobbies; eyewitness news accounts are also available on the site.
Videos can be shared publicly or privately with friends and family; you can also discover new videos through common interest "tags," "channels," or user-created groups. The search system will also produce results based on keywords other users have searched for. With Dailymotion, you can view your video feedback and spread your videos across the web by posting them on your social media sites, blog, or website.
Users can create video slideshows when using Dailymotion, which uses Stupeflix technology. To access the link to the slideshow creation tool, go to the Option menu > settings > extra. Slideshows take at most 30 pictures and a music file. Stupeflix slideshows are rendered in a MP4 video format, not flash.
The bit rate is unfortunately less than the 5 - 9 megabits for expected HD quality, but the site supports video content playing at 720p on a HD set. Excluding MotionMakers and the Official Users, the maximum size of a video file is 2 gigabytes, and the length of a video can be only 20 minutes.
Uploaded videos will be converted to the VP6 codec at a resolution of 320x240. The audio for videos is in stereo, encoded MP3 at 96 kbit/s.
The Canal+ network signed a large deal with Dailymotion in 2007. The deal stated that Dailymotion would broadcast its full television series. Canal+ videos are shown on an encrypted channel of Dailymotion with anti-piracy security. By next year, Dailymotion had an estimated 8 million unique visitors each month in France alone, and its revenue increased to?10 million.
This partnership with Canal+ financed Dailymotion with the ability to upgrade its servers to include High Definition video and MotionMaker videos. The HD quality (1280 x 720 pixels and 1.58 to 1.85 Mb/s) was made available to MotionMaker users by February 2008. By October 2008, HQ quality (512 x 384 pixels, 30 images/second; H.264 used for images and AAC at 96 kb/s for sound) was made available to all users. Videos using the HTML5 video element with an Ogg video format became available in May 2009.
With the aid of Audible Magic, Dailymotion implemented an acoustic fingerprinting system which detects copyrighted videos and then doesn't publish them. Dailymotion is the first video sharing website to use this technology (supplied by INA).
With its value already at EUR120M, it's apparent that Dailymotion will be around for a while with its high-quality slideshows, special security and easy video sharing. As this company goes above and beyond its goals, its rise to the top of the video sharing industry is something worth watching.
