How is Hindi Movie Industry Changing?





For the last few years, there has been a huge change in the themes and presentation of Bollywood movies with the frivolous, popular genre being substituted by serious, closer to life movies that feature contemporary stories. This move can be noticed in the newly released and upcoming Bollywood movies.

The clear line marking the divide between the art cinema from the popular cinema is fading. The new Bollywood movies being released portray real issues and are well directed, edited and cinematographed. The movies being made by the new age directors are affecting the tastes of the public and introducing them to more realistic cinema.

The subject matter of upcoming Bollywood movies and several new movies that recently hit the theatres like Rocket Singh, A Wednesday and 3 Idiots portray real life characters and protagonists tackling with problems you and I have faced too. The struggle of a middle class man revolting against terrorism and social problems like corruption is commonly portrayed in new movies.

Use of high quality and scintillating special effects and technology is evident in many movies including Krrish, Love Story-2050 and Drona. Even animation movies are enjoying popularity and big producers like Yash Raj Films are investing money and effort in such movies.

Another change that has recently become well known is the remaking of old box office hits. The recent newest remakes include Don that was a 1970 superhit starring Amitabh Bachchan and RVG ki Aag which is a remake of Sholay.

The subject matter of upcoming Bollywood movies and several new movies that recently hit the theatres like Rocket Singh, A Wednesday and 3 Idiots portray real life characters and protagonists dealing with difficulties you and I have faced too. The current directors have been directing movies on the storyline of an ordinary man fighting against terrorism and life problems in general.

Another visible trend is that quite some movies like Love Story-2050, Krrish and Drona have utilized the world class technology and graphics to create a larger than life effect. Even animation films are enjoying popularity and large producers like Yash Raj Films are putting their money and effort in such movies.

Another change that has recently become well known is the remaking of yesteryear's blockbusters. The recent latest remakes include Don that was a 1970 blockbuster starring Amitabh Bachchan and RVG ki Aag which is a remake of Sholay.

Further, the production houses are making more and more movies directed at city audiences. A Lot Of of these movies including Page3, Wake Up Sid, Fashion, Metro and 3 Idiots that were targeted at the metropolitan viewers have done well even at box office.

Further, a noticeable change is that some production houses have been making many more Hindi movies every year than before. In fact there is an emerging trend towards co-productions as well.

Last but a noteworthy trend is the better reception of Hindi cinema abroad and enhanced overseas revenues of the movies made by big Bollywood banners. A huge number of the Indians who are now residing in other countries still crave for Hindi movies and it is predicted that soon Hindi movies will be competing with the Hollywood counterparts in global markets.
