You have no doubt heard of "The Hobbit", who is based on a book
written by J.R.R. Tolkien, who is also the author of "The Lord of the
Rings". It is part of the Hobbit Books Series and an interesting fact is
that "The Hobbit or There and Back Again" was written and published
before "Lord of The Rings". This article provides the hobbit book review
and I do hope that you will it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
"The Hobbit or There and Back Again" is the original title of the book that was first published in 1937. JJR Tolkin wrote the book as a children's adventure novel, but it became also very popular with adults worldwide, in fact it became so popular that to date is has been published in many different languages and the book sold more than 100 million copies worldwide. The book is so popular that it has never been out of print since 1937 and to date 39 editions has been released in English alone.
Just like "The Lord of the Rings", its sequel, and "The Silmarillion", the story in "The Hobbit or There and Back Again" plays off in Middle-Earth, and it is all about the adventures of Hobbits, Dwarfs and a Wizard fighting the forces of evil.
Who are the Characters in the Hobbit:
Hobbits are small creatures, about half the size of a man, who made their home in The Shire, in Middle-Earth. The 4 things Hobbits like the most are good food, good beer, a good smoke and because they mainly live of the land they like to grow things. They dress colorful and because their feet are big and hairy they do not wear shoes at all.
Hobbits are mostly left alone and they also keep to themselves and they consider more adventurous Hobbits as troublemakers to be looked down upon.
Dwarfs are also smaller creatures, but unlike the hobbits, Dwarfs are master builders and they build their cities underground. Dwarfs love precious metals and gems, and they occupy most of their time mining deep underground. Although not greedy by nature there are few creatures that can be as dangerous as a Dwarf when the Gold Fever strikes.
Gandalf is the wizard in this story and because Gandalf is the wisest man in middle earth, his purpose is to guide the forces of good in middle earth against the forces of evil.
The Hobbit Plot Summary
Gandalf the wizard accompanied by a band of Dwarfs arrive on the Hobbit's doorstep where Gandalf recruits Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, somewhat against Bilbo's will to accompany them in the quest to The Lonely Mountain to reclaim a treasure that was stolen by Smaug, a dragon. Bilbo who has a weak personality is easily persuaded by Gandalf and without knowing how he will assist, Bilbo ends up travelling with Gandalf and the Dwarfs to defeat Smaug.
Initially Bilbo is regarded by the Dwarfs as somewhat of a burden and as they get farther away from his home they encounter many dangers and obstacles including Trolls and Goblins. Bilbo also becomes more adventurous and ends up saving their lives a few times and also freeing them from prison.
Without giving too much away, this book is all about the journey and in this book it is also where Bilbo found the ring which is the focus of Lord of The Rings.
