Now is the time to look at video for your website

Web video is big. I'm not just talking about YouTube [http://www.youtube.com] with its user generated anarchy; where fat-boys with lightsabers sit alongside George Bush-is-stupid mashups on the most viewed list. Or the other web video that's taken our bandwidth by storm - bitTorrent rips of the soon to be released Hollywood blockbuster, complete with back of the head views and sweet wrapper soundtrack. No, internet video has matured and now businesses of all sizes are looking for video content to sell their products, inform their customers and show off their brand.
Actually putting YouTube down to just fan boy nonsense is unfair. It contains thousands of tutorials, news stories and important social events. It has become the great new repository for all things video. Obama's inauguration speech has been viewed more than 3 millions times; 'George bush is stupid' has over 300,000 hits; Star Wars boy with lightsaber has over 10 million hits. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
Web video is so big because it's so small. Small bandwidth; small size; small expectations.
Just as images crept onto websites in the wake of cheaper and faster dial up connections, web video has followed the take-up of broadband and its increase in speed. New compression technologies allow HD video to be streamed to your PC. The complexities of video encoding & hosting have gone thanks to YouTube's easy uploading tools. In the near future people will expect to see a video demonstrating your latest product just as surely as they expect to see your company logo on your homepage.
Online video has changed our viewing experience. In every other area of visual entertainment we expect more. At the movies we want to see digital images, experience 3D pictures, and listen to surround sound. If your television broadcaster sent YouTube quality pictures to your TV you would cancel your subscription. As we expect more from our broadcasters; HD, surround sound and on demand services are now common, we are still happy to watch nothing more than an animated postage stamp online.
There are many ways to get your web video made. With a bit of effort and a little outlay you can use a webcam and the free tools that came with your Mac or PC to create your video. Or you may want to use a  to give your video extra sparkle. Either way you'll find that having a video to show off your business and it's products will be time and money well spent.
