Gone are the days when film making is exclusive to directors, cinematographers, and editors. Today, regardless of age or profession, anyone can now craft their own masterpieces simply by using simple video software. Thanks to Windows Movie Maker (WMM), one’s dream of becoming a full-pledge director is now at the touch of his/her fingertips.
Getting Started with WMM
WMM is a video editing software by Microsoft. It is a free feature of Windows XP and Vista. With the ability to capture audio and video to computer from a video camera, web camera, or other video source, WMM allows users to create simple movies with an easy-to-use interface. The software also allows the import of existing audio, video, or still photos into WMM to use in the movie being created.
Publishing or sharing one’s own motion picture to his/her families and friends through SkyDrive, Facebook, YouTube, and Flicker is permissible using WMM. If one chooses to save his/her direction to a computer or a recordable (CD-R) or rewriteable (CD-RW), WMM is still capable of doing so.
Video Editing Made Easy
Decades ago, video editing was a strenuous task that usually takes months or even years to be completed. Traditionally, the process of editing is very straightforward and mechanical and there were two ways to do it:
Film Splicing
Video is edited through cutting sections of the film then rearranging or discarding them through the use of splicing machine. The machine lets the film footage to be arranged in place while it is cut or spliced together.
Linear Editing
This process is done in linear fashion, requiring at least two video machines connected together. In this editing concept, the main is to copy only those part of the source tape that one wants to keep to a new tape which will become the edited version.
With the birth of technology, however, video editing can now be completed within minutes. With Windows Movie Maker, for example, one can now create a short film in a span of a few days or less.
Through WMM’s click and drag user-friendly interface, transitions and visual effects, video editing becomes less tedious and less complicated.
